I’ve seen where people have issues with the tongue, and I can see that. It’s just a matter of getting it to fold to your ankle during break in. It can hurt at first. I had no issue with it myself. Very short break in time. Runs at least half a size large. I think they are great boots and look sharp. Very waterproof so far. Highly recommend these. I’ve used them for indoor and outdoor work and had no issues.

The problem is simple…way more leather than liner in the tongue. I can’t believe this isn’t addressed. Customer service wasn’t helpful either. Cut and paste response to one email and no response to another. Sadly returning and looking at another brand.

These boots are great after 60-70 hours of break in. I wore these to work and broke them in properly. There is a trick for the tongue that hurts the ankle at the beginning like people say, but it goes away.

Well I have worn this pair 7 times and so far I hate them, they are the most uncomfortable boots I have ever owned the first time I wore got a little scuff so I cant take them back.thinking about donating them to the homeless shelter. I hate it cause I read good things about your products ,but I am thoroughly disappointed in these boots. it’s like yall made a quality well built boot, then handed them off to Mrs Thompsons 6th grade home economics class to build the tongue.the tongue is poor and makes these boots ridiculously unbearable.sad cause they are sharp looking boots.

Just like all the other reviews, the gussetted tongue bit into my ankle when I tightened them up. It’s a shame because it’s a great looking boot. I will be returning them .
It’s a shame that these boots are horrible designed and they do not make a heritage non steel toe without the wedge bottoms. I am very disappointed!’
    No Thoorogoods for me!

Great boots once their broken in. I had a tongue problem just like others but I installed a heel wedge in the boot and lift my heel upward for better comfort.I wear these boots every day working and hunting .I shoot sporting clays in these boots all weekend.
If you’re thinking about buying this style buy them very nice boot .This is my 3rd pair from this company and I’m damn proud to wear union boots that are crafted of excellence you have my vote. 🇺🇸

Like other reviews, the gusseted tongue bit my ankles when laced tight. The toe of the right boot had a grind mark and the moc toe portion was very uneven. On a brighter note, the leather was awesome. However, I sent them back. I wish Thorogood made this boot unlined and without the gusset tongue. They would be way more comfortable.

Great boots, they look good and are quality made. However, I choose to replace the insoles with ones with more arch support, and I had to remove a staple that was protruding on the inside from the factory.

I love these boots! They are super comfortable out of the box and seem to be very durable and waterproof 8 months later. I don’t have the tounge issue like others. Best/most comfortable work boots I’ve owned!

I love the boots other than the fact that the tongue has too much material I assume because of being waterproof and then when you tighten your boots it folds up a lot and irritates your ankles a lot. I actually cut some of the material away on the tongue to try and fix the issue and now the waterproof lining is coming apart. If I didn’t do that I would definitely return them and get a different boot.

Hate to say this because this could be a great work boot, having the regular non-wedge soul and a non safety toe; but don’t get these boots until they justify this issue; it seems like it’s a common problem.

Great product they do seem to rub my ankle so I jut loosen up the strings and they work fine, also I have to put a double knot so the strings don’t come completely loose

same issue as above thorogood please fix the issue
boots are great except the ankle issue with the tongue fabric fold

I ordered these from amazon. They seemed to fit perfectly when I first tried them on except some fiddling required with the tongues. I walked around the house for a few minutes and commented to my wife that these were the best feeling boots I’d ever warn. Then, about 15 min later, after walking all over the house, the tongue folds began to grind into the inside portion of my ankle bones on both boots. I loosened them and tried again…soon the same problem. I took these to two shoe repair shops to see if there was something that could be done. Only one had a potential remedy that he would not guarantee(removing part of the tongue to eliminate the fold).
Neither thought the problem would go away with time. I loved these boots in every other way. In comparing them to my old Chinese made Irish setters of similar design, I see that they us a fabric piece in that section of the tongue and there is no protrusion to irritate my ankle. In every other way the Irish setters are not half the boot, but I can wear them. Unfortunately I can’t wear these so, I’m sending these back and not reordering unless someone from that factory can assure me that I must have received a defective set.
